Found new use for lip grip

Hi all, I went fishing at the local dock/lake and had something happen
that I thought I should share.

I was making maximum distance casts throwing a Spook JR and using a
Curado 101 spooled with 8 Lb Stren Original in high vis gold trying to
hit a point about 120 feet away. I was coming up a little short but
still got one of the bass to come over and hit the Spook. I could
quickly see the gold line moving toward the weeds and started cranking
like a buzz saw. The bass got very close to the weeds and I knew I
would be in trouble with the light line if the bass got into the weeds
but then I noticed the line started to go the other way and head out
into the lake. So I slowed down and let the bass head into deeper
water. I was thinking no reason to pressure the fish with it headed
away from the weeds - WRONG! There was a PVC pipe sticking out of the
water marking a sprinkler system and sure enough the bass wrapped me
up in the pipe or maybe the concrete under the pipe. I could feel the
line rubbing on something and knew the light line would not hold long
if it was grinding on concrete so I let off all pressure and waited a
while for the bass to maybe decide to go back to the point and unwrap
the line so I could have another shot at it. It did not so I started
to look around to try and come up with plan B. I see there is a old
beat up canoe that somebody had left on the private strip. I wonder if
it is locked? The question comes to mind how do I check the canoe
without risking the bass back lashing the reel and pulling the rod
into the lake? Some quick thinking and I set the friction knob on the
reel to let line out with little drag but enough to try and keep the
back lash out. Then I grab my Lip Grip and clip it to the rod and tie
the 4 foot rope I keep on the Grip to the dock. I walk over to the
canoe and sure enough it is not locked so I launch it and hand paddle
to the pipe and was able to get my Spook back. Even landed the fish
and released it. It was the hardest I have ever worked for one fish
but it was fun.

BTW - anybody that fishes out of a small boat or canoe make note, the
reason I keep a 4 foot piece of rope tied to the Lip Grip is it makes
for a great way to clip onto a small branch or lilly pad stem to hold
position when fishing close in. Works great when you want to stop
moving a work a spot.

Hmmmm It seems to be a great idea to use it to clamp onto a branch etc.
However...what DO you do when you bring that 6 lb'r in and have to make a
choice of detaching the boat or landing the fish??? I imagine, in a good
wind, you'd add to your fun and enjoyment that day! RichG

sprinkler system...under water?

Was it the intake line for the sprinkler system?

Depends on the area, but I have seen fish farms use a sprayer in the middle
of a pond for both aeration and cooling. Cooling can be a real issue in a
pond with no water flowing through around here. Especially if it isn't very
deep.

Man talk about fun. Many years ago when I worked for the telephone company
I made friends with the manager of Global Fisheries. He invited me to pick
up a rod from the office and play in their bass ponds whenever I was working
in that area.

It was better than the pros doing the private stocked ponds on those fishing
shows. You would catch a fish every cast. Even if you missed a hit another
one would nail it.

Could be aeration, I fish a pond that has pumps running 24 hours a day
year round..

lol gotta love a naturally balanced ecosystem...

It's down hill from a land fill, nice healthy bass..catch and release
only, no question about that...

Hi Warren and the group, that's a good one LOL. If you water the lilly
pads they will grow nice big flowers ;-)

Seriously a common practice in this area is to put the pickup for the
sprinker system in the lake instead of drilling a well.
