Default Madison Report

http://www.mrfc.com/MrfcRepmadison.htm

The guy at MRFC in Ennis writes excellent reports.

I'm pretty sure the river's been right around 1200 cfs whenever I've
been there and it's apprx 2600 now. There's three of us coming with
two pickups and one boat and I'm trying to talk Bevin into bringing a
second boat...

Thanks Bruce. Does that flow make it much more necessary to do extensive
sucking up for a float ride or is it still wadable enough to do some
fishing? The MRDC website appears to be down right now or they have
some filter to prevent us east coast dwelling folks from getting the
info to feed our incredible DT's to be out west again? See you in a
couple weeks.

Thanks Bruce. I'm having the same problem as Allen getting to the site.
Its all his fault so he'll be sleeping with the crabs (hey, its the
Chesapeake) by Sunday night.
As someone who floats the Madison, what flies do you recommend for time in a
drift boat in mid July? I'm tying some of my "Frank's Fighting Craw,"
Barr's "Slump Buster" (both tan and olive) and "Autumn Splendor." Got some
golden stone nymphs in size 8, black stones in 8 and 4, and a **** load of
foam bugs. I'll have PMDs, caddis (including Tom Littleton's fabled Coyote
Ugly), wets, nymphs, and finally, a 120 dollar overweight charge from the
friggen airlines.
I can do a lot from shore, but as someone who's done little time in a drift
boat (two whole days), I'm looking for some ideas.

From another source. Sounds like a good time for the pontoon boat. Watch
those bridges!:
Lyons Bridge-Ennis: 6/21/05

Floating below Lyons has been sketchy, as the bridges between Lyons and
Palisades can not be safely passed under in most drift boats. Once flows
drop below 2200 CFS, the float will be safer. Below Palisades the river is
clear down to McAtee, but fishing has been difficult due to the tremendous
flows. Most of the fish in the "float section" are getting a nice break for
the moment and fattening up for the rest of the summer. Fishing should be
excellent when the river drops.

I think we'll be dealing with more water than I've seen on the Madison.
Levels are starting to drop and we've got a couple weeks before the
Clave. Here in CO, most of our river have peaked and are starting to
drop. There's LOTS of water in the area. We'll find some that is fishing
well. If Montana gets heavy rains over the next couple weeks (unlikely)
lakes and ponds are always an option. Hebgen and Quake are VERY close
and hold some big fish and there are lots of small ponds around.

I've only floated the Madison maybe 4 times and I've always caught more
fish on foot. Extensive sucking up is still good though ;-)

Hopefully we'll have a second boat along.

Let's start the over/under line for cfs @ the Cameron MT streamflow
gauge for July 9.

My guess is 1600 cfs and we'll all be happy.

Allen, I think the Kirby Ranch gauge is the most relevant.

Willi, Hasn't the river been right around 1200 cfs when we were there
in the past? How do you look up historical data on the USGS site?
