floating fly lines

What is a good line for a moderate price? I can't see paying $50 or more
for a line.

I use a few Cortland lines. Both the 444 and the 333 come in under $50.
I've found that, with proper care, the 444 lasts a few seasons longer
than the 333.

If you have plenty of time, buy an English FF
magazine (e.g. Trout & Salmon) where you
will find plenty of adverts. for discount lines by
mail order. My club was very pleased with its
bulk order (years ago.)

What Tim said. I mainly use a mix of Cortland 333HT and 444 lines. The
444 seems to last longer and is a bit more supple than the 333, making
it more pleasant to cast with slower acton rods. The 333HT is probably
the best bang for the buck unless you fish very frequently. I also have
one S.A. Mastery line I use on a medium fast acton Sage rod. It
performs well on this rod, but not noticeably better than the
Cortlands, and is more expensive.

I have it on good authority that Hook and Hackles store brand line is
just 444 with an olive paint job.

Rio makes a line called Mainstream that goes for about $35 that a few
of my friends rave about.


There's actually lots of choices. Even a Crystal River $10 special
will work for a season or two.

SA makes a range of lines that sell for under $20 that I have no
problems casting (then again, I don't cast very well ..... :-)
