Northern Minnesota fly fishing?

I'm going to be on a houseboat on Crane Lake in N. Minnesota for 5 days in
early Aug. Is there any chance of catching anything with my fly rod? Or
will I have to join the ranks of the "spinners"?

You should be able to catch smallmouth and northern pike
on the fly. Poppers, Sneaky Petes, Dahlberg Divers and
the Reynold's Pike Fly tossed with a 6, 7 or 8wt. Although
for me catching a northern pike is always accidental and
never pleasant. I *HATE* those damn things.

Ken is right with one proviso. With the warm temps its going to be an
early morning or late evening fishery. Mid day you might want to drag
a big bugger or rabbit fur leech on a full sinking fly line. Honestly
though lake fishing during the mid day in early August is usually
slow, whether you use a fly rod or spinning rod.

Amen. The only excuse for lake fishing at mid day in high summer is a belly
boat and a floating cooler full of beer.
