Good trip for Dad's 60th b-day, have 5 days to go

Hello fishermen and women,

Need advice on a good trip to surprise dad with for 60th birthday. He
has always wanted to go fishing up north.

Need advice on season, location, lodging, good outfitters - generally
on how to go about planning a fishing trip.

Not a fisher myself, so the more advice the better.

First things to find out a Is he into flyfishing? If not, you
need a different group to ask, though some of our people are generally
knowledgeable. What kind of fish does he like to catch? Does he
like to fish from shore, from a boat, or what? Does he fish lakes or
rivers or both? While some of the people here might be able to give
advice on trolling for walleye in a boat, we're not the ideal ones to
ask about it. And, no, I don't know who or what group would be the
ideal.

Oh, and what is his idea of 'up north'? If he lived in MN, it'd mean
way up in the state or in Canada. If he lives in Tennessee, it could
mean anywhere north Pennsylvania, though it probably means deep woods
and pine trees are in his mind.

How much can this present cost? If your budget is under $1,000 and
you want him to have 10 days, you'd be well off getting to a quiet
lodge or motel somewhere in a good fishing area and, if boat fishing,
rent a boat each day, getting advice from the local sporting goods
shops and gas stations on where to fish. If your budget is bigger,
you'll probably be happiest in a lodge with a guides and meals
provided. Might even be able to do a fly in for Canada (does he have
a passport? I've read that's necessary now for over border travel.).
That would definitely qualify as both up north and a big special trip
to remember.

guides and meals. Would that imply river or lake? I think he would
like river fishing better. I know he has done that in the past - and
gets to lakes frequently, so a river would be novel.

Any suggestions on regions in Canada? Is salmon confined to one region
in Canada? I think I'll get all the siblings in on this so, the budget
is pretty open. I think what we will do is come up with a couple
different itineraries and then let him choose. (or he may have an idea
all his own).

about now, great sport.

There are two basic kinds of salmon and a few variations on them.
Atlantic and Pacific. Either coast or the Great Lakes will provide
salmon of one kind or another in the right season on the rivers that
flow into the seas or the Lakes.

I understand that fishing in Labrador is something extra special, but
the west coast of Canada is reputed to be great. That'd mostly be
British Columbia, if I recall my maps correctly.

And there's always Alaska. Some of the posters here have done some
lovely Alaska trips. I think you can catch any almost any kind of
trout or salmon up there.

time. One may catch a weird out of synch fish out of the run season,
but it'd be just luck. So it's best to have a backup of regular

walleye, though I understand they're not good at grabbing flys.
They're more a lure / bait fish.

And give your dad the brochures of the places you suggest with prices
on them, so that he'll not try to go too gently on your wallets. Dads
can be like that. They tend to be more accustomed to giving than
getting.
