Default Boat question

Hey guys, I am going to take this in to get it looked at, but I wanted
to throw it out here as well. For some reason, and this just started
happening, as I am running, and trim up the motor a bit, the boat seems
to sway , even in small chop. Almost like it is out of control a bit.
It almost feels like I am floating on the water and swaying.

For those who do not know, I have a 1989 Ranger 354V with a 2004 Yamaha
Vmax 150 (not HPDI).

Thanks guys

Chris

Sounds to me like you're getting chine walk. Now that your motor is fully
broken in, you're feeling the full benefit of the motor's horsepower. The
boat is running high on the pad and you're running a fine balancing act with
the hull on a small surface. Any air turbulance under the hull or
irregularity in the water's surface will cause the boat to do that. My
ProCraft did that all the time.

Try trimming down just a bit or reduce the throttle a tad and the problem
should go away.

Ok, so it is pretty normal then? I just hadn't noticed it before, and I
was out running tuesday, and I came out of this bay wide open and it
started doing it, and so like you said I backed off a bit and trimmed
down, an it did go away.

As long as I know that, I will not worry to much about it.

Thanks Steve,

Chris

Sometimes you can reduce that chine walk (but doubtfully eliminate it) by
adjusting your setup. It will also depend on load and balance. With
another big Bubba in the passenger seat I can run 70 in the new Bass Cat and
it won't chine walk except in the most adverse conditions. Conditions where
I should probably drop back to 60 anyway. With just me in the boat I have
to pick a line to the right of where I am going and hold the wheel to the
left to eliminate it entirely at WOT and trimmed for best speed. When I
first got it the motor was set wrong, and it was a lot worse. I don't
remember if it was too deep or too shallow, but somebody told me a motoro
set too deep and trimmed way up will walk pretty bad. Even my tunnel hull
would walk a little bit if I set the motor too deep (stupidly too deep lol)
and then trimmed it up all the way.

Believe it or not a prop change may make a difference too. I was running a
25P 4 blade Trophy plus and while i was able to dial int he boat ok for that
prop I was never happy. I changed it to a 25P 3 blade Tempest and amoung
other things my chine walk was reduced immediately. That was even before
tweaking the boat for the new prop.

You mileage may vary.
