Default Going to KY...Cave Run Lake

I am driving my Father and Mother-in-law from south Georgia to Morehead, KY
for the Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival next week. I will be flying back
but not before he and I spend a day on Cave Run Lake with a guide.

Now, we fish largemouth and specks down here and have never ever seen a
muskie. Up there they are muskie nuts, so I found only one guide for
multi-species fishing. He says that we will spend a hard day fishing for
smallmouth and will probably get a few bites. I realize this is a hard time
of the year to catch bass, but bass are all we know. Therefore, I ask you
guys, will we have a better chance at some good catches if we throw for the
muskie?

Your responses are appreciated.

Regards,

James

Ah yes.... We've never fished for smallmouth either.

Well, it's really hard to say. Muskies in any body of water are never in
high numbers, but at times, they can be much easier to locate and catch than
other species. A case in point was when two guys hired me to fish for
walleyes. I knew that the walleye bite was off and wanted them to catch
fish. I suggested instead that we try for muskies because the bite the day
before was nothing short of fantastic.

Those two guys ended up catching 11 muskies that day, setting a new record
(for my guide service) for muskies caught in one day. I talked to a guide
that had been out for walleyes that same day, he and his clients got
skunked. But that was an unusual day, most times when I'm guiding for
muskies, I expect to boat one fish, and if we double up and each angler gets
one, it's been a great day.

My suggestion would be to let the guide make the decision based on his
knowledge of the lake at the time. Muskies, due to their low population
densities and propensity for larger lures (most times) require more work
than the other gamefish, but when you see and feel a 4 footer at the end of
your line, it's worth it.

James, I can't help noticing you're way ahead of the rest of us. How was the
weather next weekend? I see it's already October 4th where you are, even
though we're still stuck in September.
