Default Caught My First Gar!

Alligator Gar. 'Bout a 26-incher. Caught him on a gold 0.5 oz. wob-l-rite
w/wire leader. Hell of a fight! Jumping out the water and everything. Also
caught three bass, a redfish, a large black drum, a large flounder and a
catfish. All caught on the wob-l-rite. Excellent day of fishing. Lake
Pontchartrain South Shore at the mouth of the Wilson Canal.

A good way to consistently catch Gar, if anybody wants to is to use a
piec of woven nylon rope on the end of your line. Just un ravel a bout 6
to 10 inches of it and let it out. Pump it in a little and let out and
repeat.
The Gar's teeth get tangled in the rope real effectively no need for a
hook of any sort.

I read about that. I've been on the lookout for the parts to make such a
lure.

Cool! Are you sure he was the actual Alligator Gar species? Some
people call all Gar "Alligator Gar". The actual species is extremely
rare. The easiest Gar species to hook is Shortnose.

Pretty sure about the species. I caught another the next day that was
definitely a different species from the first. I haven't found a decent
species reference with photos.
