As early as this week, the US House of Representatives will vote on House
Reconciliation Bill (HR 4241) that, if passed into law, could lead to
extensive damage to trout and salmon watersheds on our public lands.
Sections 6201-6207 of the bill would amend the 1872 Mining Law to allow
public lands to be patented, or sold off, to mining companies that
expressed an interest in mining an area for $1,000 per acre.

We need you to let your Representative know this is a bad idea by clicking
here. http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?ID=M712360149241337221152265

These harmful provisions, inserted into the bill without any public
hearings by Representative Richard Pombo of California, weaken standards
set under the lax 1872 Mining Law by allowing miners and other development
interests to privatize public land without any review or federal
oversight. Public lands are home to more than half of the nation's
blue-ribbon trout streams, are strongholds for all of the imperiled native
trout in the western United States and Brook trout in the East, and
contain some of the best remaining habitat for migrating salmon and
steelhead. As more private lands are subdivided or posted, public lands
provide the last access for sportsmen who wish to fish, hunt, and camp
with their families and friends. That access would be effectively lost as
a result of Representative Pombo's legislation. Representative Pombo's
fire-sale of public lands would reverse a 30-year Congressional mandate
that public lands should remain in public ownership.

First, we need you to use the link below to write an e-mail to your Member
of the House of Representatives and ask him or her to vote against the
House Reconciliation Bill unless sections 6201-6207 are removed. Once
you've done that, please tell your representative how you feel by calling
their office through the Capitol Switchboard at 202.224.3121. When you get
the operator, simply ask him or her to transfer you to the office of your
Representative.

The vote is likely to occur soon, so please, do it today.
