Howdy,
Ran across this on another forum. It's a paper about the discovery of a "new" species of wild trout in Mexico in an Atlantic drainage: http://www.americanfishes.com/conchoswhitepaper.pdf For more background on wild trout in Mexico, check out this article: https://webspace.utexas.edu/deanhend...ican_trout.pdf Fascinating stuff. Chuck Vance (also check out Tomelleri's illustrations of the trout on the Americanfishes.com website) |

WOW. Thanks for the links. The best single source on Mexican trout I had was the americanfishes.com page http://www.americanfishes.com/mexico/ but the Hendrickson et al. article blows it away..... |

WOW. Yep. It was well-established that there were trout in Baja, but this is big news. Thanks for the links. The best single source on Mexican trout I had was the americanfishes.com page http://www.americanfishes.com/mexico/ but the Hendrickson et al. article blows it away..... Absolutely. I had run across the americanfishes.com stuff a year so so ago as a result of someone (here maybe?) posting a link to the illustrations, but this article does a great job of synthesizing all of the previous research. FWIW, my interest in all this is somewhat selfish. SWMBO and I may wind up retiring to Mexico, and it would sure be nice to be able to chase some wild trout there. But there's a lot of work to be done if those fish are to survive. Chuck Vance |

The isolation of remaining populations may be their best protection. As everywhere, stocking of introduced trout is increasingly a problem. Yep, the Mexican government has been stocking rainbows for many years, but only relatively recently has it been seen as a tourism industry. And I think you're dead-on with your observation about isolation being the best protection. From the reading I've done, it appears that the only places with surviving populations of wild fish are those places that are too rugged to farm, cut lumber or homestead. Don't know if you've run across this: http://www.melingadventures.com/trout.php Thanks very much for the link. That looks like exactly the sort of thing that I'm looking for. From the reading I've done, you don't just go to one of those rivers and start hiking around on your own. (Not unless you want to risk being shot.) Now if I can just find some trout fishing in the state of Guanajuato, within driving distance of San Miguel de Allende. Chuck Vance |
