I have two user accounts set up on my latptop, one for me and one for SWMBO.
Both are Admin accounts, to facilitate installing programs. On SWMBOs side, I cannot open multiple Explorer windows. control+N won't work, and when I select file/new/window it only resets the old window. I've checked the box in tools/internet options/advanced/reuse windows for launching shortcuts, and I've gone into the registry to check that she has the appropriate command setting in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/AllowWindowReuse. None of it changes anything. I've disabled and uninstalled Google Toolbar (some website mentioned that it could be blocking new windows as a popup) and I've tried running a registry sweeper. I have no idea what the problem is, but it only exists on her side, not mine. Any ideas? --riverman |

Make yourselves log in with an admin account if and when you need it and use normal accounts for normal usage. Trust me on this one. I don't let ANYONE use my computer unless I'm looking over her shoulder. If you do, you're just asking for it. Note the very recent (8:19 AM) post from Jeff Miller. i've yet to figure out a way to "ban" rachel from doing anything she has a mind to do...but she is a gremlin when my computer is involved. the last time she fooled with it, she spilled a pepsi on it and fried the circuits. it's gotten kinda humorous... kinda. jeff |

Trust me on this one. OK. I had set her up with a normal account, but I wanted to install some apps on her side, and needed to change it to admin. I'll switch it back. Are you saying I should use a normal account also? I cannot open multiple Explorer windows. control+N won't work, and when I select file/new/window it only resets the old window. I know this doesn't solve your IE problem, but it *is* a better way. Hee hee. I won a bet: I told her the very first piece of advice I would get was to change to Firefox. I might have gotten her switched over, but the problem with the multiple windows still bugs the hell out of me. I hate the little ghosts in the machine that develop: it makes me fear that all sorts of gremlins are at work behind the screen, giving away my account numbers and losing irreplacable data. Call me paranoid, but....well....but nothing. Call me paranoid. I haven't switched over to FFx because I can't figure out a) how to have it log into yahoo.com automatically, and b) how to read newsgroups. --riverman |

Are you saying I should use a normal account also? Yes. Absolutely. Because any worm that gets onto your system shouldn't be running with admin privileges. (or keep thinking "It can't happen here" - only to find out some day that you were wrong) I've disabled and uninstalled Google Toolbar (some website mentioned that it could be blocking new windows as a popup) and I've tried running a registry sweeper. Glad I could help. g Hope you won something good! Your first guess was actually a pretty good one. I have usually seen things like this when a toolbar or other add-in steals the keyboard to 'add features' but is either broken or partially removed. Look for and run a tool called BHODEMON. It will help you remove any browser helper demons (what IE add-ins are called - and you might be surpised to find some you didn't know you had...). That might turn up something. Disable any that it finds and see if that helps. You can then turn them on one at a time (if you really want them back) to see which one breaks you. Other than that, the best solution might be to create a new account for her that doesn't have a screwed up registry, and move her files over. -- Stan Gula http://gula.org/roffswaps |
