Soft Jerkbaits

does anyone here fish soft jerkbaits in the spring, prespawn, spawn or
post? if so please tell me how to fish them in clear water and what
types are best.

I fish jerkbaits from ice-out until ice-up with good success. Fishing them
in clear water is little different than fishing in stained water. First of
all, you have to know where the fish are in the given time period. You
can't catch them if they aren't there.

Secondly, you'll probably want to use a more lifelike color pattern. Clear
water is rarely the time to use wild, bright colors. Pearl, watermelon and
baby bass will probably work the best for you in clear water. That's not to
say other colors won't work, but those three are good ones to start with.

I use Zoom Super Flukes and Lunker City Fin-S minnows with good success.
Typically I Texas-Rig them on a 4/0 or 5/0 extra wide gap worm hook. I fish
them in an erratic, jerking motion, with the speed of the retrieve
determined by the water temperature and the fish's activity. This time of
year, it's more typical to fish them with a jerk, pause, jerk pause, letting
them flutter down and watching the line as the lure drops. Often times
there's just some line movement to determine that a fish has eaten it.
Later on, when the water warms, I'll fish them faster, jerk jerk, pause,
jerk jerk jerk, pause.

We make a great clear water bait. I really don't like to use this as
advertising but I have been doing excellent on a couple clear lake out here
with them. We hae the Krystal series baits that look just like baitfish in
clear water.

P.S. Spinnerbaits do very well in clear water with silver willow leaf blades
and a shad colored skirt. See secret weapon spinnerbaits for some great
color combinations.

I have had good luck with Zoom Flukes in Albino, White Ice and Blue
Glimmer in clear lakes like Lanier.
Blueback herring in Lanier might have something to do with those color
choices.

I love to split shot Flukes, have done real well with them like that. I
also like to wacky rig them. That seems to work well in the summer in
sticks and brush

Post spawn in THE BEST time for soft jerkbaits. Get off the end of a
point in deep water, and throw towards, but not to, the shallows, with
an albino 5.75" Fin-S Fish, and watch it call up the pigs.

When it comes to clear water I always try to match the hatch. Get the
colour scheme that most closesly resembles the fodder fish in your
water. For some odd reason baits with red really aggravate nesting bass.

Dark water calls for your Junebug other dark colours.

In shallow clear water I'll rig then weightless texas rigged style
deeper water I'll use needle weights or a mojo rig.

I really love the Slug-gos. You can fish them as fast or slow as you want,
and by adding weight to the body as appropriate. The random and unexpected
movement of the bait in the water looks extremely natural to me. At least
it seems to trigger something in bass.
