recently, one of the system operators on a listserv i subscribe to
chided me for bottom-posting my replies. here is one of the responses
to the discussion when i explained the so-called convention of
bottom-posting:

You might not be scrolling down far enough to find the message, Rick. I thought Jeff wasn't responding several times, because of the original email coming first. No telling how many of his messages I missed that way. I correspond with people all over the country and the world, partly as a team member for website design and upkeep on two servers.. I think the midwesterner who chewed Jeff out is seriously in the minority with his views on"netiquette." And, like Ann Marie, I find that response style inconvenient. Of the eight computers and phones I use for email, none has that default setting for email replies, either. Which just goes to show that there may be many ways to do this.

Enjoy the weekend,
Leslie Rawls

I don't particularly like top posting, but I think getting all bent out
of shape about it, to the point of calling people names, is an even
worse abuse.

Those who pertinaciously insist on top-posting after being
informed that it's not appropriate in this particular venue
are rude, stupid, lazy ****tards.

That's not "bent out of shape", that's not "abuse", that's
just the way I feel about it.

YMMV.

you're certainly entitled to your feelings, even if they aren't
rational. but, you're an impolite "asshole" and unqualified by your own
conduct to make pronouncements on propriety or to have your opinion on
such matters given any respect. that's how i feel about it.

Take a census. Count all the posts to roff other than your
own for the next two weeks and record how many are top posts
and how many are normal posts.

Then get back to me about "rational".

count the number of people who voted for george bush... then get back to
me about the logic of counting what people do.

I say we take a count of how many people care about Jeff top-posting. I
think it adds to the charm of the place, and it is always fun to see the
"rise" to the top posts. ;-)

Nope. They are people that understand that we're not posting using
teletypes. GUI readers with scrollbars and PgUp/PgDn functions negate the
whole point of bottom posting. Those who refuse to change with the
technology are Luddites.

(a quick snip and reply-in-context is the *best* way to respond. IMHO)

In roff and most other Usenet newsgroups the convention is
normal posting, in other venues such as email or listservs
the convention is top posting.

Some of us are capable of doing both.
