The melting agent is more probably the carrier
than the DEET; an early carrier (e.g. 1980) was
acetone, a solvent for just the sort of plastics
used in fly lines (and rod finishes too.)

The active ingredient has been approved in Europe for years. I wouldn't be
surprised if picaridin-based products are all over the shelves in a variety
of names.

The active ingredient has been approved in Europe for years. I wouldn't be
surprised if picaridin-based products are all over the shelves in a variety
of names.

Not only that, Bayrepel, the EU Picaridin repellant, is quite a bit
stronger than Cutter Advance.

My experience with Picaridin is mixed. It worked well on the early
season mosquitoes but less well on the later season species here in
WI. According to their website that wouldn't be surpising.

My experience with Cutter's Advanced was less than satisfactory. First
light application wasn't effective at all. I had mosquito bites almost
immediately. Next application was about 2 hrs, and many bites later(I
should've put it in my fishing). I sprayed it on much heavier than the
first application, and this seem to work well, but only lasted 2-3
hours. Last application was even heavier than prior ones. I don't think
I got a bite after that. Now that i've had some experience with it, i'll
continue to use it, but i'll carry it with me for further applications.

In my opinion, DEET is much more effective than Cutter's Advanced. I
hate the smell of DEET, but if I think i'm going to be in bug invested
areas, I will use it over Cutter's Advanced. My go to DEET repellent is
3M Ultrathon. One application in the morning last pretty much all day.
