I'm sure this is a dumb question, but . . . When is it more beneficial to
use a lure that stays close to the top of the water?

Karen C.

Low light conditions (sometimes) and when bass are actively chasing bait.

Good to know. Is spring better than any other season for topwater fishing?

Thanks for your feedback!

I live in northeastern Wisconsin and I've found that the fall period,
starting about now is quite possibly the best time for topwater!

This is really great to hear. I can't wait to get out to give it a try.
Thanks!

I have pulled up prespawn fish on top. I've pulled bass off beds by
suspending a topwater over their heads during the spawn.

In the summer months I've caught plenty of fish on top early in the morning
and as the sun is setting in the evening. In the summer and fall I've
caught tons of fish when I spot them busting bait fish on the surface, and
even sometimes when I just see ripples on the surface, but no busting.

I even had a day last winter in December when I ground out 12 -15 fish on an
overcast day just throwing poppers all day long.

I'm glad I asked. I never would have thought you could much of anything on
top in the summer or fall. I can't wait to give this a try on our next trip
out.

Duly noted. I'm anxious to give it a try as soon as we can get out.
Stinkin' thunderstorms are coming this weekend, though 8-(
