Lousy weather

To paraphrase some singer or other, potential fishing days are dwindling
down top a precious few. I can count on my fingers (and maybe a toe or
two) the number of days I'll get to spend on the water the remainder of
this year. And now it looks like I'll have to cancel all my plans this
weekend because of the steenking, lousy, weather. Supposed to get 2+
inches of rain tomorrow, accompanied by 30+mph winds, and Sunday it's
supposed to clear up, but get windier. SIGH. This after last weekend's
Champlain trip got screwed up by 8 inches of rain on the 2 days before I
got there. The southern end of the lake was the exact color of brown
kraft paper. Sigh. We caught a 30 or so anyway (it IS Champlain after
all) but it was nothing like the same weekend last year.

I fished a little while today with no luck in Franks Tract of the Sacramento
Delta. Did get a few little stripers. LMB's are slow right now. Maybe too
much sun. Water was 61.

I hear Ya Rich, Low 30's tomorrow morning and the heavy rain and high winds
are making me think sleeping in might be the better choice

I can tell you that Champlain was fishing as weak as I've ever seen her when
I was there Rich. Despite the obvious weather barriers I encountered, the
bite was way, way off. Don't get thinking that just because it "IS
Champlain" that the pond can't be affected by heavy pressure. Many pros I
talked to were coming to that realization, and were relating the fact that
you had to find "your own" stuff if you wanted to kick butt on the big lake.
Community holes are dryin up & virtually all charted stuff was getting
pounded into remission. The lake is still great, but record numbers of
anglers & tourneys are starting to take thier toll as well.

Conversely, I can't wait till my next visit up there.

Not down south it wasn't! The fishing during that period was great! I
just wish that all those guys in the BASS and FLW big events that come
out of Plattsburgh or Mallets would stop coming down south and
transplanting my fish 90 miles away!

Lol I hear ya! Probably good to have some fish moved from that area,
otherwise overpopulatrion might kick in lol. Of course, a great bite can
stink if you can't get the fish back to the weigh-in. ask Chris
Baumgartner, he ran down to Ti on day 1, caught 23 pounds, and got back 35
minutes late. The water was tolerable early in the AM, but things broke
down quickly. O, he only left 2 1/2 hours to make the trip back. That's
why I told you that with only 4 days of practice that I couldn't risk taking
the time to practice down there, the lake blowing up & my plans screwed. As
it turned out it didnt matter, I was in way over my head just being 30 miles
north of the ramp with nothing but 6-12 footers between me & the scales.

When Champlain is good its good, but when its nasty its n-a-s-t-y. Frankly,
that's one of the elements of big-time tournament fishing that I'm not
especially fond of. Too much like work ;-)

Well, I passed on Saturday because of the rain and wind, and my fishing
buddy and another guy went to a little cartopper only lake and got 63
largemouth up to 5-1/2 pounds between 'em. Mostly on crankbaits and jig
& pig. Turned out the rain was pretty much done by noon, and the wind
gusted every now and then, but mostly it wasn't bad. I actually ended up
cleaning my gutters so you know it wasn't too bad out.

So the same guy and I went yesterday, and the wind howled 20 to 35 all
day, while a nasty cold front sat on us. Ended up getting 10 between us,
all out of 20 to 30 feet of water, mostly on light stuff -- grubs and
drop shot. Tough fishing. Boy did I pick the wrong day of the weekend to
fish.
