I don't fish, so I'm not really even sure I know what packs of 3/0 or
4/0 wide gap hooks are, nor do I know if he fishes with artificial
lures. Is that pretty common?

If he's into bass fishing... artificial lures are probably a sure bet. I
like the Bass Pro Shops Gift Cards myself. That way, I can be sure that I'll
like what I get.

Although, you can't find Secret Weapon Lures in Bass Pro Shops... that's too
bad.

you think he might want, it might be something that he never even puts
in his tackle box,, make him happy, tell him it's just for tackle, he
can't spend it on the grand kids, only for his own tackle box, this way

doing this for my son a couple of years ago, now when his mom ask him
what he wants for Christmas, he instantly says a gift certificate to
Academy Sports. (we don't have our Bass Pro shop open here yet)

Agreed. You can't go wrong with a gift certificate. If Bass Pro Shop isn't
available just get one to any retailer that has a good supply of fishing
related tackle.
