The other night, my three year old and I were out fishing when the top of
the water went nuts with fish activity for about 15 minutes. Last night, I decided to go back and see if I could catch one of those fish. The same thing happened about 45 minutes before sunset for 15 minutes. This was out in 100 feet of water not too far from the dam. Turns out they were white bass chasing shad. Within 15 minutes, I had landed quite a few. I lost quite a few too due to poor hook setting technique. By casting into the different areas where they were jumping like crazy, I could get a hit every cast. It has been a long time since I have caught white bass. For a 10" fish, they sure put up a great fight, especially when compared to crappie. Once the frenzy was over, I only had a couple of hits over the next hour and landed only one more fish. What was wild was having the shad spill out all of the boat. As I was pulling the fish into the boat, I kept seeing all of this flashing out of the corner of my eye. I was to busy trying to unhook the fish and get to the next one. When I finally looked down, I had quite of few shad laying all over the boat. The shad were 1/2" to 1" in size and overall, very small. At least, I think they were shad. They were mostly silvery white with blue coloration on top. Jeff P.S. I was using an 1/8 lead head jig with a chartreuse grub tipped with a small piece of nightcrawler. |

What do you mean by an agitator plug? Something like a jitterbug? Or is
that something that floats without a hook and you tie hooks with leaders to it? The weather is nice again today so I may go out again tonight to see if the same thing is going on. One guy I talked to out there said they pulled in a 2lb white bass. That must have been fun. He thought the state record for Ohio was 5lb. I have never caught any white bass larger than 10 or 11 inches. Jeff "Bob La Londe" wrote in message s.com... Try a float and fly or even specialized agitator with a jig or two tied on behind. We used to fish the warm water discharge areas of Lake Erie for white bass using a large "agitator" plug. We would tie a 4-5' leader on behind with a small jig on the end. Sometimes we would tie on a second jig a foot or so behind the first. It worked very effectively for surface feeding white bass. You could often catch them two at a time that way. Hold on. Let me see if I can find a link to a picture for you.
http://tinyurl.com/32kty I posted a picture in the link above. This is a picture I quicked up in corel presentations, but it shoudl convey the idea very well. I have used purpose built agitator with the best success, bt I have also use a very large popper instead of the agitator plug, when I could not get agitators. You have to experiment and see what gets you the most fish. I had a hard time finding them on the internet, but lots of the tackle shops in Northern Ohio sell them. In order to get my last batch of them I had to get in touch with my Uncle Paul who lives in Avon, and have him send me some. There are two or three brands atleast. glo bobs is one made by North American Outdoors in Akron Ohio. Another in Jock's Agitator made by TJ Mfg in Cleveland Ohio. -- Public Fishing & Boating Forums Fishing & Boating Link Index www.YumaBassMan.com "Jeff Durham" wrote in message ... Thanks Bob. I understand it now. A picture is worth a 1000 words! I will
definitely give that a try. Jeff "Bob La Londe" wrote in message ... Hold on. Let me see if I can find a link to a picture for you. http://tinyurl.com/32kty I posted a picture in the link above.
