Mercury force

Hi, I'm looking at a boat to buy with a 1986 MERCURY FORCE 150hp
motor. I've been hearing bad things about Force motors but what year
is the cut off of crap to good? And how can I know if it's really a
1986? Thanks much Sam

Get the serial / model number off the motor. If it has a mercury serial
number you can punch it into the Mercury Parts Express website and it will
tell you what year it is.

If it is a 1986 it is probably a Chrysler. Nothing wrong with that.

Get the model number off the motor and post it in the Force board on the
iBoats forums, and somebody will be able to tell you right away what year it
is.

For instance my Force is a model 507F90C

50 7 F 90 C
50HP 1990 Model 'C'
(I don't remember what the 7 and the F are for)

Think of a Force Motor in the same class as a generic work motor.

If you are really concerned, just make sure it has water pressure, and good
compression on all cylinders. I'ld say anything over 120 and less than 10
lbs total difference between cylinders.

My dad runs a pair of Force 150s on his 22ft Bayliner with walk a round
cuddy cabin. That boat leaps out of the water.

That is not a Mercury product. It is a Force. Chrysler sold it's OB division
to Force in 1985. It is a Chrysler designed product. It is not the best
engine, but is easy to work on. Parts are getting expensive. Make sure the
compression is good in all cylinders - within a couple PSI of each other at
least. I used to own a 1985 Force. Glad to get rid of it when I did.

If you want to know what is a good motor just look at what the commercial
fisherman use. Suzuki, Yamaha, Mercury and Honda. It used to be a lot of
Envirude but not anymore.

Because it's coming on a boat that he's interested in. I know for certain
that Force Outboards used to be Chrysler Outboards, because my first wife's
dad was one of the head engineers for Chrysler.

Force acquired Chrysler, then Brunswick bought the whole mess, with the
intention of selling them as an entry level outboard, often packaged on a
lower cost boat. For a while, from around 1990 to the end, from 50 hp and
up, Force outboards were the original Chrysler powerhead, with Mercury lower
units and electronics.

I had a 1995 Force 75 hp outboard that gave me good service, with the
exception of the time I tried SplitFire sparkplugs and cooked a hole in the
#1 piston.

If you REALLY like the boat, and the compression on all cylinders is fairly
consistent, the motor shows no signs of abuse and it does what you want the
boat to do, and the price is right, then get it. I'd make certain that I
was able to test drive the boat prior to purchase, or better yet, get a 30
day money back WRITTEN guarantee.

Just understand that parts availability might start becoming an issue if you
do have problems and you might end up re-powering the boat.
