I'd like some opinions on fly rods please.
Been fishing all my life , coarse and sea, just had my first fly casting lesson, and need a rod. Im thinking about either a Daiwa Whisker MK2 or a Grey's G-series ? 9 foot, #6/7 Both about £50-£60. Ive been told its better to have a slight 'soft' action ? Any suggestions ? thanks, M. |

Your instructor will have a good idea what would suit your physique and action. You forgot to tell us what sort of ffing you intend to do and where... Im thinking about either a Daiwa Whisker MK2 or a Grey's G-series ? 9 foot, #6/7 Both about £50-£60. Ive been told its better to have a slight 'soft' action ? Maybe, maybe not - a soft action is forgiving of less than perfect technique but loses a little in range and accuracy... In general: For small stream brownies, grayling, dace, roach and run of the mill chub #3-5 is about right, shorter rods for wading under trees, longer for rough open banks. Pond rainbows, big river browns, seatrout, occasional grilse, mackerel, garfish, small bass, small pollock, chub, perch #6/7 Large seatrout, occasional small river salmon, general summer run of shore sal****er species, small summer pike use #8/9 General salmon where a conventional salmon rod is too long, *big* trout, pike, autumn/winter run of sal****er shore species #9/10 Though rather than the fish think more about the size of fly you'll use. It -is- possible to drive a #2/0 home with a brook rod but you'll find it much easier with a #9 Hth.
