Not much of an attempt at a first trip report, but Ken was right in his
above post, until others tune in with better reports from Penns, here goes: My wife finally let me spend a whole day on the Muskegon Saturday. Plenty of trout feeding on salmon fry, steelhead and sucker eggs. The stocker rainbows ate nonstop all day. Indiscriminate in their appetites, they ate anything and everything offered to them. With few bugs on the water and in the air, I started with a caddis pattern (caddis have been very heavy on the lower end of the river the last few days, although not up near the gravel). The caddis was destroyed within an hour. What the hell, try to match the few mayflies next. Same thing. Plenty of small, 6-8" fish everywhere I cast. Fished streamer patterns and nymphs behind the steelhead and sucker redds with just a little less action. The suckers were so thick that in some places the entire river bottom seemed to move. After nine hours on the river, and a forgotten number of trout caught and released, I headed back up river to the launch, only to find the hatchery truck blocking the launch as it dumped more stocker rainbows into the river. July and Agust should be good months for stocker fishing up there. Jeremy Moe |

Not much of an attempt at a first trip report, ... To the contrary, quite nicely done. Thanks for the TR. Peter Charles and I fished the Muskegon in early April six or seven years ago. We took a break from chucking lead and nymphs at steelhead with 7wts and broke out the 4wts to toss dries at the little stockers from the drift boat. It was nice to just be able to cast a fly rather than chuck it and the little stockers were cooperative enough to hit whatever we threw at them. Fun stuff. This is one of the steelhead I caught that day on the Muskegon: http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&i...074&myphotos=1 That was fun stuff too but I'd rather cast than chuck any day. -- Ken Fortenberry |
