Last Tuesday was a government holiday in the US (Veteran's Day). Your
faithful government servant took the opportunity to check out the low flow situation at the San Juan, in preparation for the upcoming clave. The flow rate was low - ~250cfs. It's expected to stay at that low level through April. The weather was supposed to be terrible (rain, cold, snow). It wasn't. Everyone told us the fishing was slow and the fish were hiding. It wasn't and they weren't. The weather was gray most of the day. Midges were clustering like crazy. Dry flies were working fairly well, as were SJ worms and midge emergers (zebra midges and chocolate emergers). The water was fairly murky, which usually makes the fish a little less picky. Here are a few pictures: http://bryan.lally.org/SanJuan/ I'll leave those up for a couple of days. Still looking forward to the clave. 3 rooms at Rizuto's are taken, the other 5 are empty! - Bryan |

Hi Brian,
Great pictures and report, Thanks. PS: I have a hat like that and my wife calls it "birth control". -- Bill Kiene Kiene's Fly Shop Sacramento, CA www.kiene.com "Bryan" wrote in message ... Folks, if your only net looks like that one, and you're going to C&R on the San Juan, do everyone a big favor and leave your net home. Folding a 24" rainbow into the bottom of a net such as the one shown will injure the fish, perhaps fatally. It's a ridiculous thing to use on that river. Smarten up out there. /daytripper (C&R shouldn't equate to uninformed mayhem astream...) |

But we were way up in the midge waters. Griffith's gnats were good if you could pick your fly out from the naturals. There were a lot of naturals and the light was real flat, so picking yours out from the crowd was pretty tough. Small parachute adams with a little of the tail cut off were working OK. Mike had some fly he had tied that looked a lot like a Griffith's gnat with a little white post sticking up that he could see - that was the best fly because you had a chance of telling if the tack was your fly or a natural right next to it. We were also floating the flies down to the fish from above, on 6x tippet. I tried fishing a few of the fish from below with 7x, but that just wasn't working. See ya in a few weeks. Looking forward to it. |
