Orivs 3 wt TLS rod

On my last businesss trip I passed an Oriv shop with equipment at deep
discount. I have not done any fly fishing for over 15 years and was
never very good at it either. I decided to pick it up again so
checked out the Orvis stuff. The salesmen sold me a 8 1/2 ft 3wt TLS
for $130 and an CFO 123 reel for $90, which seemed like a good deal.
However, after reading many of the posts here, I am beginning to think
I should have gotten a 5 wt rod as my only rod. I told the salesman
that I usually just fish in the eastern Sierra and catch trout less
than 2 lbs. Should I return the rod? Thanks

Add the 5 wt (9 ft. 5 pc) to the kit. Pick up another reel. Go fishing.

Larry, why don't you work with what you have and see if you are going to
like it any better than you did the last time. I only assume that you
didn't like flyfishin', cause you said "I have not done any fly fishing for
over 15 years and was never very good at it either." It is my most
considerate opinion that you either like flyfishin' or you don't. If you
didn't feel that you were any good at it previously, it is likely that you
quit because of perceived lack of proficiency. Give it another go, but this
time seek out instruction from fellow flyfishers or your local fly shop
folks. If you get to the point where you are comfortable with your castin',
you WILL fall head over heels in love with flyfishin'! If you don't catch
fish right away, don't get discouraged. Keep at it! I learned on my own,
and it took me quite some time to get the hang of decent castin'. However,
once I began to feel the rhythm, I was hooked for life.

"Decent" is such a relative. I won't go into how the word relates to
humans.

Op --admittedly, not so *decent* a human-being, though I do wash my hands
after every trip to the restroom--

Sounds like a nice outfit.

If you are mostly fishing smaller streams, it might be just right.

If you are indicator fishing large rivers or doing lots of float tubing, you
might need a 9' #5 outfit.
