I need to replace a #5 line on a rod that I use when I want to heave it out
there as well as fish more normally I'm considering a SA Sharkskin ... 'one born every minute' Has anyone here actually fished ( as opposed to cast ) this line enough to provide feedback on things like does it pick up dirt badly ( all the little hollows? ) does it cast short well? does it mend well ? does it REALLY float as well as advertised? and for all day? will the line noise drive me nuts ( short journey ) ? |

Larry, here's the skinny on SA sharkskin from the Sac show: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewise08flycoverage.html I doubt if I'll ever use it, but give us a personal report if you do get it. -tom |

I'll let ya know what I decide when I make up my mind The reports i've read say the line will cut your fingers after a day of fishing it. I guess it's rough enough to wear little cuts in your stripping finger. I also read there is a distance gain(only one report I read said he didn't gain any distance), floats really well, and mends like a demon.....since it floats so high. Like you, i'm was tempted, but I will wait for your report. ;-) brians |

I drove the 35 miles to the TwoWallowMe (sp?) only to cause ( I'm convinced I was the cause ) gale winds and never took a rod out of the case. Still had nice walk on the river, saw one or two rises in the white caps. |

I'll let ya know what I decide when I make up my mind I've been playing with them ever since my SA rep gave me a couple for demos and field testing, I have used both the stealth blue/gray and chartreuse in the 5 weight on a Sage 590-4 Z-Axis which the line loads beautifully, it is definitely a line for fast rods. I have fished at Taneycomo, the White and the trophy waters on the Current River with very good results. It does not seem to collect dirt or other debris any worse than any other line I have cast on those waters. Because the line sits so high on the water it has less surface tension than any other line I have cast which in turn means that it does not roll cast well in close although that does not effect its performance in overhand casting where it performs as expected in short casts but it definitely excels when you want to bang one out. The noise distracts some people but I personally got used to it very quickly and now only notice it occasionally. Finally, it floats as advertised. I was planning on buying a distance taper for my Z but the Sharkskin wins out and will be my line for big water. The winner for me was a day with wind that would have shut me down with any other line, I was still nailing 60' + casts and the wind did not tear the loops apart at the end. |

'one born every minute' Has anyone here actually fished ( as opposed to cast ) this line enough to provide feedback on things like I have been playing with one since last fall. Out of the box it's everything advertised and my experiences mirror mr. featherbender. I don't do a whole bunch of streamer fishing but it is rough on the line finger if you do. If it floated any higher it would hovering, mends well enough, etc. Echo the other poster, it seems to do more on a faster rod than my slower rods in terms of getting extra casting distance. On my XP and BIIx I can boom the entire line pretty much effortlessly. On my go to IM6 or Paradigm it just doesn't seem to load as well. I don't think it gets any dirtier than any other line and I've not cleaned mine yet other than running it through one of the cortland cleaning pads. The noise is really different. Mine's been on winter hiatus but I am hearing from others that it's not holding up well to constant use. Two of the guys I know who were initially high on the line have quit using it. One said it quit floating as well and the other one claimed some deterioration in the coating. I didn't pay for my line and when the salt water line comes out I will write a check for one. I like it but not worth $100 for my trout needs. Personally I think it's a distance line and I just don't find myself in enough situations where I need to cast over 50' if that far. |

On my XP and BIIx I can boom the entire line pretty much effortlessly. wow, I think the Sharkskin line is 110 feet so with leader and a little reach with the rod that is a 125 foot cast !!! Well, I told my friend to get me one, so I'm committed. Let's see, $100 line, I'll need a $700 rod to suit it, probably should get a matching reel, and clearly I need daily casting lessons for at least a year :-( I won't be able to afford fishing trips anymore, but, damn I'll be ready G Thanks Wayne, others, for your feed back ... appreciated |
