rod abuse??

I broke my 9 weight tfo on the feather today
I caught a salmon, my line was all the way in, just the 10 feet of
leader. I put my pull in the water so I could get a hold of the line to
release the salmon, and he made a run and broke my pole just past the
mid point

Is it wrong to let your pole down to grab the line? Will temple fork
consider this my fault? How does it rate as far as rod abuse?
