Default smallmouth fishing...(and otheres)

MSNBC has an article on the best fishing in north america,,,it speaks of
smallmouth fishing an hour north of the twin cities on the Mississippi
river.

....I believe I'm going to camp there for a week and see what happens....just
haven't decided when...

There is excellent smallmouth fishing in the Sylvania Wilderness
of Michigan's UP near Watersmeet. I'm going to camp there for a
couple of weeks starting the Tuesday after Memorial Day (May 27).
Drop by and check it out if you have a notion.

I'll be in the Clark Lake Campground, it's a car camping campground
with 42 sites, flush toilets and a shower house. I'll have two canoes,
the lean, mean muskie chasing machine (aluminum with outboard) and my
little cedar strip. I'll do mostly day trips into the wilderness with
the little canoe and perhaps an overnighter if I'm not getting into
big bass on the day trips. The big canoe is for muskie fishing just
over the border in Wisconsin. And on the days I'm not fishing for
trophy smallmouth in the wilderness or muskie around Boulder Junction
I'll be in search of little native brookies in the trout streams of
the UP. Brookies, smallies and muskie, the Midwest trifecta.

Like I said, drop by anytime I won't be hard to find. The campground
only has four loops and 42 sites and you'll recognize my old Volvo
wagon with the Illinois plates. If you can't bring yourself to drink
a Budweiser then BYOB.

What's the link?
The river between St Cloud and Monticello was pretty good long ago
when I fished it. If you can't find a camping spot there are plenty of
motels there now. The river flairs out into some shallow sections
just upstream of the Nuke plant. Easy to wade and fish in the
summer.
The river between Monticello and St Cloud was supposed to have some
good Muskie fishing as well.

If you want to camp I'd head up to the Gunflint trail. We fish at
lake off the Gunflint that is clear as gin. the bottom is spotted with
boulders as big as houses. It's to deep to flyfish ( except in the
evenings). The smallmouth attack anything. I'd give you the name of
the lake but it might cause me bodilyharm. It's more fun to find your
own. Bring bug dope.

If the Mississippi doesn't pan out I know of an out of the way, rod
and gun club managed, free campground on a nice smallie river in NC
Wisconsin. Easily wadable. If the water isn't too low its quite an
enjoyable float too.
