Portland, Oregon next week

Any suggestions for fishing near Portland for someone who is headed there
on a weeklong business trip (Mon - Fri)?

Depends on the fishing Gods, but you might find a steelhead in the Sandy or
Clackamas next week. A couple more weeks would be more dependable. There
is some talk the brood stock they use on the Clackamas will return later
this year. We have had just enough rain to start bringing in a few fish.

Look for the Clackamas gauge near Estacada and hope for about 12 feet. Use
the Sandy gauge near Bull Run. Hope for around 9 foot.

If you are going to be on the west side of Portalnd you can get to the
Wilson river faster than you can get to rivers on the East side. The
Wilson runs along side highway 8 for about the last 10 or 15 miles.
Highway 8 is the route from the Portalnd area to Tillamook.
The state website is reporting Chinook in the Wilson.

Like all rives aroung here they can change radically in a few hours.
The Wilson has a flys only section. I'll see what else I can find.
I can send you a scan of the maps and the section on the regs telling
you where the flys only section is etc.

The Wilson runs along highway 6, not 8. And there is no flys-only
section.....but other than that everything else is right. :-)

Your right - I shouldn't post form the salt mine. Last year ther was some
fly only water, this year I hadn't seen any one there without a fly rod.
Still if Mus looking for a place close to Portland the Wilson may be it.

The Wilson's a great place if you are on the west side of
Portland. At least since I moved up here in 1997 there's
never been any fly-fishing only waters on the Wilson though.

That said, yes pretty much everyone on the upper waters uses
a fly rod.....although I've seen enough garbage on the banks
to know that not everyone does. The lower waters seem to
be mostly populated with spin fishermen though.

There used to be some fly only water, but that is always closed now. I
never fished it, but I heard it was a kick. I think it was up in the
Devils fork area. I'm not sure why they closed it.
