I looked in today, basically for the last time. I wont be posting
there any more after this, and I will simply delete the group from my
address list later today. Time for a clear-out in any case.

Indeed, I will post this to the group as a sort of "farewell".

To be honest, the group was very poorly visited anyway, before the
NEFF people linked to it there were hardly any posts apart from a lot
of spam so I don´t really think it is any great loss. I remained
subscribed more out of habit than any real chance of actually
learning something new. Now that the ROFF scumbags have put their oar
in, I don´t want to use it any more anyway, as I don´t want anything
to do with them. Even just reading Fortenberry´s name somewhere makes
me sick, and elicits a very strong desire in me to punch the *******
in the face.

With regard to the general decline of this group, there is simply too
much competition on the net now, there are huge numbers of sites
offering first class information and pictures, even good videos on
step-by-steps and related themes, at the click of a button, so the
"position"and importance of such text only Usenet groups has been
steadily declining anyway. Practically their only major feature is
the "unmoderated free speech", but as many have found to their cost,
this is not only an advantage. It basically means that any scumbag who
feels like it can malign or insult you, spread lies etc, and there is
basically nothing you can do about it. The time when most users
behaved like gentlemen as a matter of course is also long gone. Much
the same development can be seen on other heirarchies, but it has gone
faster, as they were smaller to begin with. uk.rec.fishing.game has
gone completely down the pipe for instance, last time I looked there
was one good article from a guy I knew,a lot of spam, and a whole load
of rubbish and abuse from some obvious loony with considerable
persistence and a grudge against another long-time user.

A lot of bad publicity in regard to Usenet as a result of people
apparently misusing binary Usenet groups for child pornography and the
like has also accelerated the decline, as fewer providers carry such
groups, and many are cancelling Usenet coverage altogether. There are
still a lot of sites which provide the groups on the web, but I
suppose in time they too will decline. There is simply no way for them
to maintain people´s interest, and the trend for people to read and
write less and less is steadily increasing. Most want "entertainment"
or "infotainment", and don´t want to actually "do" anything at all.

I think the only reason the ROFF group still flounders along is that
its denizens can still misbehave there without redress. It is more
like a private club of crusty old anarchistic and obnoxious arseholes
than a Usenet group anyway. Many of the people who still post there
more or less regularly are probably fairly decent people in normal
everyday life, but constant exposure to ****bags rubs off in time, and
it seems few have the character to withstand it.

Not much about fishing there either. Mostly politics and more or less
private squabbles carried out in public. Even the insults they fling
at each other, and indeed anybody else who wanders in, are old and
stale.There are very few new posters arriving, indeed the last few
times I looked I didn´t see any at all, but people still leave, or
simply cease posting, which amounts to the same thing, so when the
present incumbents die off there will be no replacements. Probably
just as well.

Once upon a time it was basically the "only show in town" for good fly-
fishing information, but those times are long gone, and will not
return. Even if you ask for advice there and actually get some that
you can find in the shower of **** that inevitably ensues, most of it
will be completely out of date. Many of those people have been using
the same methods and equipment their whole lives, and never learned
anything else the whole time. This of course is reflected in the
advice.

Also, as far as I am concerned, as I run my own site and have just
started a new forum, I don´t really have time to bother with all these
things any more. Anybody who wants info from me can come and get it
directly.
