Default Anybody Tried Tenkara Fly Fishing?

Okay, got sucked into the adverts. Spending tons of money of rods,
reels and lines for fish that are within a few feet of your feet.
I like the concept of Tenkara (Japanese form of fly fishing with long
"dapping" style rods and the line tied to the end of the rod, no
reel).
With a 15' rod (telescopes to 20") and equivalent line length tucked
into the back of my vest, I can see about 90% of my nymphing being
done with this rod. Also, when dapping would be the thing to do (such
as last year at Penns when the drakes covered the water), to have this
rod available would be very helpful.
Anybody tried it or seen it?

How much is this cheap fishing going to cost ya? G

I high stick with a 10 ft 5wt when I get desperate enough, but that's
as close as I've come to what you describe

Um, maybe just carry some twine for line and a pocket knife to cut
suitable branches for rods?

Oh, good God! Why do I have a sudden mental image involving Frank, a 15
foot telescoping rod, and one of those tremendous lightning storms for which
Penn's valley is noted??

Never tried it, seen it, or even heard of it, till now.

Sounds interesting, though. Sorta harks back to Walton, Cotton,
Berners, et al.

Fifteen feet of rod and fifteen feet of line would cover an infinitude
of fly fishing situations......which is to say that it wouldn't be of
much use for most fly fishing situations.

Sounds like fun.

giles.

Pretty footage. Annoying music. Bull**** commentary. "Traditional"
Japanese fly fishing became popular with professional fishermen a
hundred years ago? A hundred years ago is traditional? A hundred
years ago professional fishermen (in Japan as elsewhere, one would
naturally suppose) were using large nets, explosives, poisons,
trawlers and whatever else might maximize yields. Casting across a
thirty foot stream is impossible with a 7 1/2 foot fly rod? Oh,
puhleeze! Took a couple of seasons to learn how to cast with a fixed
rod and line length? Well, best not even try to learn how to use a
reel and variable line length! Fits in your pocket? Rats.....I ain't
got any that are twenty inches deep.

Looks like fun, though.

giles
who, if the prominently displayed index finger on the grip is
required, ala lifted pinky with teacup, nevertheless hopes to god that
he is never caught in the act and thus will probably confine his
tenkara expeditions to nighttime fishing ventures.

Well, in all honesty, my fishing expeditions owe a lot to the
Japanese. Its very zen-like. Kinda like the bucket with no bottom
drill. Cast, no fish, cast, no fish, cast, catch tree, cast, wind
knot, cast no fish. I can, and do, do this for days. Unfortunately,
I'm normally standing near someone like Willi who just doesn't
understand the technique as he vacuums up the fish left right and
center. Might as well make the fishing more difficult and teach him
an abject lesson in fisheries preservation.

I have had the Wal-Mart telescoping "crappie poles" in 18 ft length on
the deck for years. They are rigged with black gnats and hopper flies
and "strike indicators" -- the red and white bobbers that sell for a
buck a dozen -- and are used by casual house guests to catch bass and
'gills from the pond.
Tried them on the upper Current a couple times, with bead heads.
Caught a few, but landing them, unharmed, is difficult.
Price is right -- less than twenty bucks for a complete outfit. Not
for elitists.

cheers

oz, not an elitist
