Owens Valley

We are on an extended tour of the west, culminating in a family
wedding in Seattle.

A couple days ago, I made the trip from Edwards AFB to Reno, up the
Eastern Sierra. Having toured the west all my life, I somehow missed
this area.

SPECTACULAR

Fresh snow on both sides. Little creeks everywhere and every few
miles a sign indicating a fishing area.

QUESTION:

Does anyone have experience fishing this region and/or is it worth
revisiting when I have enough time to fling a fly or two ?

A minor point, but Red Bands are a subspecies of Rainbow found in the
intermountain West and are not Cutthroat, though Lahontan Cutthroat
are native to that general area.

Not being a biologist, I cannot dispute your point, but the local F&G
folks tell me these are genuine cutthroat trout, not related to the
redbands found over in the Pyramid Lake and a couple other desert
areas.

....but they tasted good.

....and I have, years ago, gotten many Lahontan cutts in scabland ponds
in WA

That's the trouble with common names. The term Red Band Trout is
most commonly applied to the subspecies of Rainbow trout native to
much of Eastern Oregon (though also found in the Mckenzie drainage of
Western Oregon), the Owyhee basin of Idaho, and parts of NE Nevada.
Any Cuttthroat found in the Donner and Blitzen , if not Lahontan, are
likely West Slope Cuttthroat. Red Band Rainbows are native to the
Donner and Blitzen basin.

Until your post I had never heard either Lahontan or West slope
Cutthroat referred to as Red Band Trout, though it shouldn't surprise
me if some people call Cutthroat Red Bands

Though Red Band Rainbows will sometimes have the red throat slashes
common to Cutthroat, they can usually be distinguished from Cutthroat
by the absence of teeth on the vomer (tongue). Cutthroat will usually
have what are known as basibranchial teeth while rainbows do not.

I live just over the "hill" ( 10,000 foot, 9% grade, Tioga Pass ;-)
and, yes, there is some very good fly fishing in that area. I
haven't been over there in a few years, now that I summer in
Montahoming, but these people used to be pretty reliable source of
info .... probably still are
