Anyone ever completed the slam? I understand the State of WY gives you a
nice certificate if you can prove you've caught all 4 species of Cutt-throat trout. My brothers and I (one of which is the editor of American Angler magazine) are going out in late July to try. Any hints will be appreciated. Thanks |

That's a neat enough publicity gimmick for the state of Wyoming and kudos to the guy who dreamed it up, but for the standard two week fishing vacation that sounds like more driving than fishing. I'd just as soon stay in one spot and relax than motor about the state in pursuit of a "certificate." But that's just me, I guess. As for hints, cutthroat are not hard to catch, all you have to do is find them. -- Ken Fortenberry |

Give my regards to Phil Monahan, but I believe there's only one species of cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarki (formerly Salmo clarki). You'll be fishing for subspecies, and there are more than four, although perhaps not in Wyoming. BTW, how do you "prove" that you've caught all four "species"? -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Actually, its not too bad. Three of the sub-species (Bonneville, Snake River Fine Spotted, and Colorado River) can be found near to the tri-basin divide in the Wyoming Range west of LaBarge. From there, it is just a half day drive to Yellowstone for the Yellowstone sub-species. The toughest sub-species to find is the Colorado River sub-species (although there are places ...). Given that these are sub-species, the differences in their appearance is pretty remarkable. I'd just as soon stay in one spot and relax than motor about the state in pursuit of a "certificate." Thanks My then ten year old son and I completed the Cutt-Slam in 2000. We did it on 1 short trip and 1 extended trip. Took us to some new places and some old places...but it was a great adventure. You have to submit photos and locations which we turned into a little presentation. I caught all 4 on dry flies, my son caught 3 of 4 on dries...bonneville was tough, he used a spinner in some deep runs. FFF has a similar deal now also. You can make it as relaxed or aggressive as you want. You will see some great country and tons of wildlife. If you want the routing...I can give you the catch all 4 in one day trip...I have a buddy that did that too ! 3 drainages, lots of snickers and red bull. You do earn a beautiful huge certificate. We took too long to turn our stuff in late in summer of 2000...we were number 102 and 103...! PS...take great close up photos that show the cutthroat and the spot pattern...that is how you can tell the difference...and the drainage area. |
