Default Fishing Rod Advice

Greetings all!

I haven't been fishing since I was much younger (probably been 15 years or
more). I'd like to try and get back into it but have no idea what kind of
rod and reel to buy. I'm just looking for something good for a beginner to
use at ponds, lakes, etc. Any advice?

Thanks!

This depends on several factors, including what you want to fish for, and
how much you are willing to spend.

I would say a medium action rod & reel combo that can take from 8 - 12 pound
line test. You can get these fairly cheap at Wal-Mart and similar stores. I
personally would recommend the Shakespeare set for about $15. It's a good
all around rod & reel that comes with lures that are good for Panfish,
Crappy and the occasional Bass. I like mine so much that I am thinking about
getting a second one! There are many rods and reels for just about every
type of fish.

Jay,

I agree that you can get a combo at Walmart, but I'd recommend spending a
little more than 15 bucks. Using really cheap equipment will turn you off on
fishing.

Brands, actions and looks are subjective, so go handle a bunch and see what
you like. I'd recommend a 6 ft or 6'6" medium power spinning combo. Spool it
with 8 lb test and have fun.

Good luck!

Mark

I was probably just lucky when I bought that one for my son, he didn't want
it after a few months, and I was surprised to find it worked so well. Been
using it for about a dozen years now and think it cost me in the $10 range
when I bought it. I do have to clean it and keep it lubed more then my other
reels though.

I agree ................. about the only one's now days for $15 come in
bubble packs and are made of plastic. Walmart does have some pretty
good combo setups in the 30-40 dollar range for someone just getting
into or back into fishing. Usually the rod is the weak link in these
combos but they still work.
