Tom commented on this book:

"Never have I seen an example of horse**** excess for no real
fishing gain in my life."

Although I still haven't read or even seen it, it's probably like most
stuff out there. Fly fishing has been around for a considerable amount
of time and with the increase in popularity in the sport and the
corresponding increase in books in the area, there really isn't much new
to write about. There have been some minor changes and "advances" but
few of these offer enough material for a book. The essence of fly
fishing remains the same.

What made me bring it up is that on the San Juan discussion group, the
book is highly praised.

Dude, the book contains recipes for about 250 midge larvae, with exactly 3
different designs! Only variations are in body materials. When someone proves
to me the necessity of having to match segmentation patterns or colors on a
size 24 pale olive midge, I will rethink my opinion of this text. Perhaps a
Westerner will win the Raffle copy at Penn's.

Obviously, none of that matters a bit, Willi. What's really important is
whether "this book" is a novel, a novella, or a memoir. Please repost your
comments with the appropriate designation of said work of literature. And do
try to keep up.

Bull****. It has recipes, which is all that matters.

Well no, not quite all. Are they one and only original AUTHENTIC recipes?
THAT'S what matters.

Speaking of which, for reasons that escape me entirely, I find myself
hosting a Superbowl party today. Does anybody know who's playing?

What REALLY matters is whether someone's going to make it into a movie.
Then we can safely be snobbish about it.

No, it only matters if the movie is popular.

That doesn't surprise me, the San Juan came to mind as I read the book. It
mentions a "white on white" pattern for black fly larva and I remembered
seeing a lot of "small white wigglies" in my seine the one time I fished the
Juan

I found the book "thought provoking" ... but much of that thought was
devoted to just how obsessive fly fishers can get G. Not all of it though,
there is information that will help catch fish ...even if you already have a
box of thread midge patterns ...

The more specialized the topic the less the majority of people will find of
benefit, from any FF book. I, personally, don't know anyone that fishes
midges enough to take all the very slight color variations listed in this
book, seriously ... I don't

But, by the same token, I do believe in the value of observation and the
resulting power of confidence that comes from believing you are fishing an
"exact match" I'd bet the author DOES catch lots more fish with patterns
he thinks are right, than ones he finds less perfect ..... don't we all? ...
I know I do .... and I know that seeking that "perfect match" is most of the
fun in the game ( yes the perfect presentation is part of the perfect match,
a big part :- )
