Madison River Flies

MADISON

Daytime Dryflies:
Fish the deepest water in the middle of the river.
Forget about bankside riffles. Too many boats and too many
fishermen chase the fish out of those spots by 8:00am
every morning.

Use all the typical western stuff: House and Lot, Royal Wulff,
grasshoppers, Trudes, Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis.
Even the old stuff works: BiVisible, Renegade, Royal Trude.

Consider a Hopper Dropper, with bead head dropper of some
kind. Fish the deep fast water in the middle of the river.
If you use a big foam hopper you can even drop a weighted
Woolly Bugger off the back of the hopper.
Fish the deep water in the middle of the river.


Wetflies:
Montana Nymphs, Prince Nymph, Bead Heads of any kind.
Fish the deep water in the middle of the river.

Streamers:
They work better when it's cloudy, or better yet raining.
But they do sometimes work during the day, especially if
you fish the deep fast runs in the middle of the river.
Use what ever you like. Pattern doesn't matter that much.
Use giant Roadkill Streamers if it is raining.

Evening:
Same as above. But smaller dry flies can be added to the mix.
