Quick question: is there any fly fishing a drivable distance from San
Francisco in April? My vague feeling is that the logical closest areas
(the sierras is where I went last year) don't really start until July.

Am I wrong? Is there someplace good I might get to with a reasonable
drive (and/or hike) from SF in april?

Thanks, Tim

Try http://www.danblanton.com/ there are local forums for the bay area.
Salt water should be available.
Perch of 1-2# at the beaches. May even be a few stripers on the beaches.

There's also a big reservoir just northeast of Napa, I think it starts with
a 'B' but it's been so long I cannot remember the name. Anyway, it has a
tailwater trout fishery below the dam.

Probably Berryessa. I've never heard about he tailwater.

That's it! It does have a tailwater ... forgot that name too ... and it's
been in the news more recently as a site where the New Zealand mud snail
has surfaced.

So Berryessa has a tailwater? I might head up there. My inlaws live in
Guernville. I can score two for one. :-)

Bring your own rock to stand on.
For the smallies in the Russian try a leech pattern or something that
looks like an eel.
There is a species of lampry eels in the Russian. The eelvers when they
are on the way back to the salt are irrestable to any thing with fins.
Way back in my bait fishing days digging a bucket of eels out of the
mud was as good as dynamite.

Putah Creek. I think a couple of people on www.anglernet.net fish there
and post reports.

Tim,
Note: Trout season in the High Sierra's opens April 29th 2006.

Ever so often a visiting fly-fisherman will ask the same question at the
local fly shops. The answer is most commonly, surf perch fly-fishing on
5-8wt gear. There are many beaches along the coast, where you can access
providing you catch the tide right. Hooking a good size surf perch on a fly
is a kick on a 5wt. And remember to rinse your gear after you're done if you
decide to go this route and most important, get a Calif fishing license, as
they are very strict on the coast.
Here's a link to some of the beaches just down from San Francisco:
http://www.halfmoonbaychamber.org/vi...b/beaches.html

Here is also a link to the San Jose Fly Shop,
scroll down to Jay Murakoshi Surf Perch Flies:
http://www.sjflyshop.com/

Further up north from SF is the Garcia River near Point Arena, it's about a
3 hour drive, but this is where the steelhead come in, you'll need an 8wt
for sure as it gets pretty windy there at times.

good luck,

Hey guys -- now that my weekend is finally here (leaving tomorrow), and
given the rainy weather of late, is there any river (or lake, if
necessary) you could suggest that I might try to hit this weekend,
within say 4-6 hours of SF?

The only suggestion I've heard thus far is Trinity river - though
apparently that's also got some problems, with a bunch of smolts dumped
in recently making for difficult fishing. Any other last minute
thoughts?

Thanks, Tim
