San Joaquin River, CA

Though the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin is a beautiful river, access to it
will be pretty challenging for a few more weeks.

I just returned from a few days in the Eastern Sierras, including the
Mammoth Lakes area. The road to Lake Mary and the other upper lakes in
Mammoth is still closed, but will probably open this weekend.

The road over the summit and down to the San Joaquin and Devil's Postpile is
scheduled to open, tentatively, for the first week of July.

The snowpack in the Sierras is the largest I can recall. The roads to
several of our favorite trailheads were still closed. They are usually open
by late May. Tioga Pass is not scheduled to be open until the first week of
July, maybe longer. All the trailheads above 10,000 feet are still
inaccessible by vehicles.

If you're headed up to the Sierras soon, take note of the wind conditions.
The wind definitely made fishing (and hiking!) a much more challenging
proposition. Be prepared to hike on deep snow drifts to get to some of the
lakes. I'm not recommending that you don't go. It's an absolutely beautiful
time to be in the Sierras. Just take a little more time in preparation and
enjoy the late snowpack.

I've never fished this area, been up on the Mammoth lakes, but I've heard
the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin
