I wrote to Scientific Anglers about sink-tip lines in comparison when
casting a WF Floating line vs. a WF Sink-tip line. Thought I share the response I got back and it did answer my question: fwiw, -tom 2/12/2007 Tom, Floating lines are tapered to reduce the mass at the tip of the line to dissipate energy and allow a smooth turnover and delicate delivery. Sinking lines, and floating lines with fast sinking tips will still have more mass at the tip, compared to floating lines, even though we taper them to even smaller diameters, due to the very high density coating we use. Because of this, these lines will not dissipate as much energy as a comparable floating line and they will turn over with more speed and will not land as light. If a caster throws a tight loop when casting one of these lines he can often feel the line "kick" a bit when the loop straightens. Since the line weighs the same as a floater it will load the rod the same, but will turn over a bit differently due to the high density tip. Fortunately, when fishing this kind of line the flies cast are often bigger (requiring a stronger turnover) and delicacy is rarely needed. Please let me know if I can help further.
