Just because this group is lacking some life and some of the regulars need
to show they are alive. What do you do as a non boater to gain an advantage and catch some fish? We have all been there, outfished by your boater for one reason or another. What do you do when it seems you just can't get a fish away from your boater. Tips? ideas? suggestions? what's your opinion? If you were/are always a boater, what have non boaters done to best you? if they did? |

We have all been there, outfished by your boater for one reason or another. It don't happen to me, not in the last couple of years, even when the front seater tried everything to block me (friendly bet), and a whole lot of laughing and cusin Most bass fishermen catch less, much less, than half the bass they toss their lures to,, I catch what they miss, and these are almost always the biggest fish What do you do when it seems you just can't get a fish away from your boater. Tips? ideas? suggestions? what's your opinion? I don't have an opinion, I have a solution. This morning I went to a local bank fishing spot, three guys slinging lures, with no hits at all, I landed 28 spotted bass in a little over two hours, nothing bigger than 3 lbs, nothing under 1, but I had a ball, before I left, I taught them a few tricks. I might have caught a couple of those fish more than once :-) I need to get me some tags -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Mojo SpecTastic "WIGGLE" rig, SpecTastic Thread, Nutri Shield insect repellent. ,Stand Out Hooks ,Stand Out Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

Tips? ideas? suggestions? what's your opinion? If you were/are always a boater, what have non boaters done to best you? if they did? Since the few Pro Ams I fish are draw team format, and the rest of the tournaments are buddy team format I am usually all about maximizing the catch for both anglers in the boat. (I may fish some split format tournament next season. Still I fun fish with buddies from time to time as both a back seater and a front seater. The last two or three tournaments I fished back seat I just threw a totally different lure in all the same holes, and of course any that were a better presentation to the rear. I got the big fish doing that my last two or three back seat outings. I fished with Harold Wah (out of his boat) once last year. I caught most of the fish we weighed in by throwing in right behind him. Under the circumstances I think he was getting their attention and I was capitolizing on it. We were actually both throwing the same bait on a flipping stick. The only difference is I was using a slightly heavier weight to punch through/into the underlying grassbed in gin clear water. In the Yuma Pro Am tournaments I run I sure wish my backseater would outfish me more often. I try everything I can to help them contribute to the bag. Easy answer, watch your boater and adjust. Like you said sometimes the boater will get the fish's attention. I find that many many times I have been on the back of the boat attention to detail is the difference bewteen catching fish and not catching fish. Vary your technique, bumping a jig the same way the boater is might not be to productive, but short hopping when he is doing a big lift and fall might make that fish bite, same with every other lure. A good example of this was when I was fishing a night tournament a few years back on Lake Hopatcong NJ. My boater was fishing a jig and would consistently lift, wait for it to fall and lift again. Never a change. I tied on a similiar jig and just kept it in contact with the bottom, every now and then sweeping it across briskly. The fish hammered it that night. I wound up with 4 good keepers and a few throwbacks. My boater skunked and went to sleep. when he woke up his battery was sure enough dead and with no way or no tools to swap out the batteries, we didn't make it back. I was only in it for big fish as I was a guest of the club, but it would have been nice to at least weigh the fish **********Hit the spots that he doesn't, big time producer of fish when on the back of a boat. Sometimes that strike zone is very small, take advantage of those opening and you will catch fish Honorable mentions include downsizing or upsizing the bait, adding scent or changing colors |

I have heard some horror stories about being back-boated but it has never
happened to me. Maybe it's because the draw trail I fish (ABA District 10) always has a lot of the same fellows that I've come to know over the years. Even when someone new comes along, I can usually get on their good side before we ever hit the water. I've even had more times when the fellow in the front offers me worms or lures that are working that I don't happen to have in the bag. My buddy who I introduced tourney fishing to a couple of years ago won the non-boater trophy last year. Not because he fished every tourney, but because he won one and finished in the top 10 in every other one. All from the back of the boat. As far as tips, I learn quite a bit from the boater even if it's what not to do. If the boater has figured a color or technique out, I will try and find something similar but not exactly the same. That always seems to help. This year, I'm planning on fishing the Basmaster Weekend Series as a non-boater. I'm sure that trail will be a lot more competitive so I might be singing a different tune after that...... ![]() -- Sandy Joren Il pesce tutto il giorno. La bevanda tutta la notte. SNIP |

Dropped an email your way(let's go fishin')! I can't give you many tips about best things to do to catch fish behind the boater; other than come down and fish with me in the back of the boat. I promise you'll catch plenty of fish! Just ask Charles about one or was it two trips (would have to check my log book) to Barkley I got spanked by him! By the way Charles, you going to ride your hot rod up this way anytime soon? -Justin |
