Default Beginner casting question..

Brian:

Just my 2 cents worth, but here goes......................

Best guess is that most of the good folks around here have been casting so
long they have forgotten that there was a little stiffness involved with
learning to cast a fly rod.

Over the winter, I decided to learn to cast left handed (I'm a righty) and
was surprised by some stiffness in my forearm. I also made all the "rookie"
mistakes, even though I know better.

Far from doing much of anything wrong, your muscle stiffness may indicate
you are doing something right. Just give it some time. Also, go fishing,
you won't pay attention to the stiffenss until you are done!!

Hello,
I'm new to fly fishing and have been practicing my overhead casting
out on the lawn. After about 15-20 minutes my forearm is really sore.
Is this a sign of someone trying to hard? ha! I've studied casting
videos and it looks so effortless, I'm assuming that's how if feels. I
think It might be my back cast I get to concerned with getting the
line flying behind me fast enough and stopping hard . I'm casting a
9ft 5/6wt. I guess what I'm saying is that I lack the "grace" that is
apparent in good casters. But my arms is killing me trying to acheive
it! Just looking for some tips and advice. Any appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks I will give it a try. It might be from years of spin fishing

I'm with you on the Dawkins book...indubitably

Well, ideally there would be no arc. More importantly, what is your age
bracket, where did you grow up, what were your early musical influences
and what is your general
education level? Knowing that, your casting problem is more easily
rectified.

John,

Ok. I'll bite. I am 70 years old, Grew up in northeast Ohio on Lake Erie,
music influences are Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, the Big Bopper, and
Elvis, BS Aero eng.

Now tell me what is wrong with my casting!

Ed
Dying to know what all that has to do with casting...

You've spent too much time getting educated, working, listening to music and
other extraneous junk. Spend more time casting.

John,
35 yrs old born, raised and living in the Cleveland ,Ohio area.
Musically, Neil Young, John Fahey, Folkways/Lomax stuff. Education a
couple years of college.
Side note the casting is coming easier..or my arm is getting used to
it. My loops are a bit open but I don't feel the "need for speed" as
much as I used to.
Thanks all,
Brian

Actually there is a casting rod arc.
One of the things that was brought when casting, is learning to match
the casting arc to the amount of line you are carrying to the amount
of force you are applying.
You can read about it here #2 and view the mpg in the tailing loops
section: http://www.sexyloops.com/flycasting/tailingloops.shtml

I discovered the sexyloops site recently. I've been following there
beginner's series in teaching myself to cast.

Hopefully, my lesson next week will fix any bad habits I'm learning g

well granted...but not the arc that one typically thinks of...Not knowing
the man's background (he be strangely silent) I guess my best advice is
Little Feet (Time loves a hero) a doobie and a six pack...then really get
into casting...

There's a librarian at CWU named Bill you need to look up. Let him cast your
rod once and a while and he's happy.
