But my kids grew up in Belfast - the windows of their bedroom blew in when the IRA bombed a nearby police station (they of course slept through it), and I tend to work in countries that are even more violent than England. There's an overground rail station at the end of my street that takes me directly into the centre of town, to Gatwick airport, or to Luton airport. My bees can forage to their hearts' content (if bees do have hearts) on the ivy and weeds that grow in the abandoned gardens round here. And I can keep my Dari up to scratch here - I speak only Dari when I go marketing at the local convenience store and greengrocer's. I've been here so long and the area is so bad (the London Evening Standard described our street as 'the worst street in Britain') that I've felt that it had to start going up sometime. In fact it's started happening. Ten years ago the upstairs apartments were occupied by some asylum seekers and a drug smuggler. Now they've been bought by an actor from the National Theatre and a City banker. Lazarus |

Sadly, some of the criminals round here don't always obey the law. Even so (http://www.crimeinfo.org.uk/): € Pro rata, the USA has 34 times the number of homicides involving firearms as England and Wales. € Switzerland and Canada have three times the number of shooting deaths as the rate in the uk. I just happen to live in the worst street in Britain. Although nearly all my neighbours are very good people, many of them come from a country where gun crime and drug dealing are rampant, and the very few relatives they have who are gun-wielding criminals tend to gravitate to this neck of the woods. Even so (http://www.crimeinfo.org.uk/): € Pro rata, the USA has 34 times the number of homicides involving firearms as England and Wales. You're cherry picking. What about Scotland, huh? :-) € Switzerland and Canada have three times the number of shooting deaths as the rate in the uk. Guns are readily available in the US. I have three. I'd bet that the average number of guns per American ROFF poster is greater than one. I just happen to live in the worst street in Britain. It must be tough to live in a neighborhood where you're at a disadvantage when you go unarmed. I'd move if I were you, but if for some reason I couldn't move, I'd pack. So you're saying you have a lot of Texans living on your street... ;^) Good one, George. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |
