For my own part, one reason why I go fly-fishing is that I find it
intensely nerve-racking, and I use it to liven myself up after the
tedium and boredom of war-zones.

You must live in a really bad part of town. ;-)

Do you live on Coldharbour Lane ? If so, have you considered
moving to a nicer part of Brixton ?

I do live there. But my kids grew up in Belfast - the windows of their
bedroom blew in when the IRA bombed a nearby police station (they of
course slept through it), and I tend to work in countries that are even
more violent than England. There's an overground rail station at the
end of my street that takes me directly into the centre of town, to
Gatwick airport, or to Luton airport.

My bees can forage to their hearts' content (if bees do have hearts) on
the ivy and weeds that grow in the abandoned gardens round here.

And I can keep my Dari up to scratch here - I speak only Dari when I go
marketing at the local convenience store and greengrocer's.

I've been here so long and the area is so bad (the London Evening
Standard described our street as 'the worst street in Britain') that
I've felt that it had to start going up sometime. In fact it's started
happening. Ten years ago the upstairs apartments were occupied by some
asylum seekers and a drug smuggler. Now they've been bought by an actor
from the National Theatre and a City banker.
