I use poly leaders and change them a lot. Especially for steelhead fishing
with a 9' rod or 15' spey rod. I do not change them very much fishing for trout in shallow water, but do in lakes. However one of the real strengths of poly leaders is that they are supposed to turn over heavy flies better, and turn over all flies in wind better. Poly leaders go hand in hand with braided loops "rw" wrote in message m... haresear wrote: My Question: Are loop connectors at the end of your fly line an advantage? They suck on light tackle. You have this gross, doubled-over, inch-long glob of mono -- plus the knots, which make the leader at least FOUR times the density at spots. It's not the right setup for stealthy trout fishing, and certainly not for dry-fly fishing. Some people complain about poor casting with loop-to-loop connections due to "hinging," or some other supposed effect, but I don't believe it. I just think they suck, period. :-) What, please tell me, is the pressing need to change leaders easily? How many times, per fishing day, do you change leaders? If it even comes close to 1 (from below), you're doing something wrong. And, when you do change leaders, what is so hard about tying a three-turn blood knot in thick mono? I caught that. But I use them on light tackle also. Reasons, poly leaders
turn flies over better, and it is easier to fine turn tippet size to situation. Poly leaders work better with braided loops. "rw" wrote in message m... The ones I have are called "Cast Connectors" They come in Fl Orange and clear.
Here's how they work. They are barrel shaped with an axial hole and a 180 degree radial hole at the mid point. Put the line in an axial hole and out the radial hole. Tie a knot, trm, and put knot back into the barrel. Put the thick part of the leader in the other axial hole and out the radial hole . Tie a knot trim, and put the knot back in the barrel.. Also; they make it easier to land fish (on the rare occasion I catch one). They slide through the guides smoothly. I used to reel in to a point where my line was still extending out the tip top. Now I reel into the point where the leader length extending out from the tip top is the optimum for using the net. |

Hmm, sounds like Eagle Claw's patent has expired and some one is making
Leader Links under a different name. Who is the Company Lat705? Ernie "Lat705" wrote in message ... The ones I have are called "Cast Connectors" They come in Fl Orange and clear. I, too, have switched over to Leader Links in the past couple of years. While
they were on my list of things to try, I believe it was Wolfgang whose pitch induced me to try them. They have worked exceedingly well for me, and have become my choice for line/leader connection. I read now, in this thread, of Ken's esthetic objection, and this worries me to no end. I think I have come up with a workable solution, however. My first thought was to merely take artists Acrylic paint and paint my Leader Links to match my elegant fly line. But, wait!! Why stop there, when I can purchase a 3/0 sable round brush and paint Pointillist landscape scenes in miniature on my leader links? Thereby, I would have a stylish counterpoint to the elegant fly line. Further, I could claim the elitist high ground, and be in a position to declare over rounds of strong drink, that using anything less is for those too lazy or incompetent to master color mixing and composition. I knew that Fine Arts minor would come in handy some day, and after 25 years, I have hit on it!! Tom |
