Op --does anyone know, if cat gut degrades fairly rapidly, and what's it
taste like?--

Can't say how fast it degrades uncooked. Cooked, it tastes rather like
chicken. Although, one species of gut tastes pretty much like another.

My personal experience is that dog is the better entre. The old fur
trappers reportedly enjoyed cougar even more than bison or elk.

You get more strikes on the red, or the black?

Ij offers---try catgut--we use it for tennis strings but sometimes when

you sort of cut the ball rather than get a solid hit you sort of hear a
whinning noise
also my neighbors are always out in the neighborhood looking for their cats

*BUT* one of the places I buy from carries ONE brand of flourocarbin in
the bulk for 3 cents a yard (y line) and I am thinking of switching

I wouldn't, if I were you! Ya know that stuff NEVER degrades, I've heard.

Again you are forgetting about the line that you lose from a snag or
from a fish. If you loose it to a rock you could easily have 4 feet

of
line.

LOSE! The word is LOSE, fool.

[TWEET!] Usenet foul, spelling flame, 20 yard penalty, repeat
first down.

Come on Cyli, your moderator job is on the line here, slap
Wolfie around a bit. :-)

Sorry. I don't moderate spelling flames, even when I'm the loser. I
tend to really flippin' hate 'looser' for loser myself. And I'm not
a moderator. I'm a bouncer. Oh, damn. I just admitted it.

You couldn't have! I lied, when I said that I had sent it the other day.
Besides, I didn't secure it with duct tape, so there!

Realistically, we shouldn't even use normal monofiliment, because it has a
pretty long life expectancy as well. How many fish have we caught or seen
that have run afoul of mono of any type? Each sport comes with its' own set
of environmental risks which change as technology changes. I suppose we
should all go back to gut leaders, but then PETA will be chaining themselves
to cats and whatever else we may use, it is a no win situation. I pick up
alot of lost mono etc. on the water while I am out, I figure it more than
makes up for the little that I lose. So perhaps that is a fair trade-off,
pick up more than you leave behind?

Fly fisherman usually pride themselves on their environmental
responsibility. Yet flourocarbin will basically NEVER decompose. It
seems preety environmentally irresponsible to use.

What are people's opinions on this?

No it doesn't, it breaks down. The mere action of current and water action
rubbing it against the snag or the rocks and once free as it tumbles along
means it breaks down into minute pieces pretty quickly unless it is in
virtually stagnant water and I can't imagine that would happen often. While
it may not biodegrade, it does break up into pieces so small it offers no
real environmental problem.
