![]() wrote in message ... http://www.rockymountainnews.com/new...-pass-gas-tax/ Rationalize this, R what's to rationalize?? So what, they'll figure out where the law stands and pay the tab, I figure. How, in heaven's name, does that, in any way lessen the absolute stupidity of McCain's gas-tax holiday? Since you bring that one up, let's look it for a moment. First, the savings is what, around $0.20 per gallon? Yet, the money generated goes into road and bridge upkeep (remember that bridge that fell into the river up in Minnesota....there's lots more where that came from). So we will mandate a reduction in bridge and highway repair to appease the slower-witted voters out there. And, at the same time, **** off anyone whose livelihood stems from road or bridge construction. Great plan, John...no wonder it was a non-starter! Tom |

Meanwhile, our bridges and roads went to pot, big chunks falling on cars. All roads and bridges suffered, except the Mass Pike which was supposed to be paid for decades ago. They keep borrowing money and therefore have to pay off the notes, so, voila, we hafta pay ever increasing tolls. To say nothing of the Ted Williams Tunnel fiasco........ Dave |

Now, state gasoline taxes are generally higher than the Fed tax. And, of course, you folks up there have a host of greedheads to blame for that whole Big Dig fiasco. Still, building and maintaining infrastructure is important, and must be paid somehow. Tom |

So what, they'll figure out where the law stands and pay the tab, I figure. The fact that they are filling up at city pumps is problem one. The fact that taxes only became an issue after the **** hit the fan is another, larger one. And should anyone start claiming that the plan all along was to pay the taxes, I'd offer that the **** would not have hit the fan, or at least quite as much hitting with such force, were that the case. The people responsible would have simply said, "Oh, yeah, we thought about that, and it's already been figured into the billing." Moreover, given that gasoline in the US is, at best, a VERY minimal profit item, and often a break-even or even loss-leader, there's not much reason beyond tax evasion to be using city pumps in the first place. How, in heaven's name, does that, in any way lessen the absolute stupidity of McCain's gas-tax holiday? It doesn't, but McCain's plan doesn't lessen the absolute stupidity and arrogance of the DNC trying to evade gas tax. And while I don't quite think his plan was "stupid," it was silly and useless, just as Obama's idea about taxing "big oil companies" beyond standard corporate taxation was silly and the "stimulus check" crap, supported by most pols of both parties, was useless. Since you bring that one up, let's look it for a moment. First, the savings is what, around $0.20 per gallon? If you recall, I said it was silly-assed right here on ROFF about the same day he (and Hillary) started trying to pitch it. TC, R Tom |

FWIW, the Dems are/were also getting thousands of free parking spaces (and myriad other "perks," like car washes) while the GOP is paying some 500 grand for its parking needs, etc. I'll bet the genius who came up with the tax-free gas idea was a Denver Republican. Apparently, not unless the Mayor and councilwoman switched parties for the day. And as an aside, those involved apparently deliberately underestimated the gas and bifurcated other "perks" out into separate columns so as to keep each amount under the 500 grand ceiling needed for council approval. Hey, conventions are good for bidness. The **** hit the fan, the DNC pays up. So what. If you hadn't already claimed to have no rooting interest in the 2008 presidential election I never claimed to have "no rooting interest," I stated that I didn't particularly care which of the two won. I always have an interest...and a principle...and a principal... HTH, R |

HTH, R Yeah that's all yow got: "EXTRA EXTRA, " "City gives perks to major convention!!!" READ ALL ABOUT IT. "Chamber expects retail sales to reach new highs." "Convention Bureau hints 2010 Dentist Confab in the Bag for Mudville." "Flash!FlasH!" "Sorry-assed Republicrat losers flog issue, "Its just so wrong, so really wrong," says a tearful Mr. Dean, from his convent cell at Our Lady of Perpetual Concern." Details at 11. Lets talk about some real scandal. War Profiteering, Tom Delay and the slaves in Saipan. The money the Republican Party has taken from the Saudis, The missing $16 billion, Dick Cheney's dealings with Libya. Who paid for the Pres's ranch. The Fbi's ongoing espionage investigations of Bush administration personnel. Administration suppression of mine safety inspections and subsequent fatal consequences. Republican donor/contractor failure to up-armor US vehicles in Iraq. FBI investigation of prostitute access to the White house. Medicare fraud and Republican "fundraising." This would make a start.
