wrote: wrote in message .. . http://www.rockymountainnews.com/new...-pass-gas-tax/ Rationalize this, R what's to rationalize?? So what, they'll figure out where the law stands and pay the tab, I figure. The fact that they are filling up at city pumps is problem one. The fact that taxes only became an issue after the **** hit the fan is another, larger one. And should anyone start claiming that the plan all along was to pay the taxes, I'd offer that the **** would not have hit the fan, or at least quite as much hitting with such force, were that the case. The people responsible would have simply said, "Oh, yeah, we thought about that, and it's already been figured into the billing." Moreover, given that gasoline in the US is, at best, a VERY minimal profit item, and often a break-even or even loss-leader, there's not much reason beyond tax evasion to be using city pumps in the first place. How, in heaven's name, does that, in any way lessen the absolute stupidity of McCain's gas-tax holiday? It doesn't, but McCain's plan doesn't lessen the absolute stupidity and arrogance of the DNC trying to evade gas tax. And while I don't quite think his plan was "stupid," it was silly and useless, just as Obama's idea about taxing "big oil companies" beyond standard corporate taxation was silly and the "stimulus check" crap, supported by most pols of both parties, was useless. Since you bring that one up, let's look it for a moment. First, the savings is what, around $0.20 per gallon? Yet, the money generated goes into road and bridge upkeep (remember that bridge that fell into the river up in Minnesota....there's lots more where that came from). So we will mandate a reduction in bridge and highway repair to appease the slower-witted voters out there. And, at the same time, **** off anyone whose livelihood stems from road or bridge construction. Great plan, John...no wonder it was a non-starter! You're preaching to the choir. If you recall, I said it was silly-assed right here on ROFF about the same day he (and Hillary) started trying to pitch it. TC, R Tom |
