When Ameritech pulled the plug on Usenet I signed on to the free nntp server news.eternal-september.org. Works fine for me, I have my Thunderbird newsreader and my killfiles and it's free. I'll second the nod to eternal-september.org. TC, R |

![]() I'll second the nod to eternal-september.org. TC, R ok, with luminaries such as you, and Forty on board, it was worth a try. Very nice, very easy. I don't use many killfiles, but being back on my usual mail reader is nice. Thanks......now, what were we discussing here? Tom |

If he had been the President he claimed, he would have been "transparent" about it all - "Our odds of getting them for Chicago aren't great, but other leaders are stumping, it has helped in the past, and so, I'm gonna at least try...plus, I can actually run a few minor errands while I'm over there..." instead of "We just suddenly realized in the last few days that I desperately needed to go to Copenhagen...and the fact that they just happen to be deciding whether Chicago is worthy of the games has nothing to do with it..." Add that to Michelle's Hillary-esque performance on "the world stage." Will the fact that Chicago didn't get the Olympics, in and of itself, define his presidency? Of course not. Is it, in and of itself, even a major issue? No. Is it just one more example of how he isn't the guy he claimed, was portrayed to be, and promised to be? Yes. TC, R Tom |

Poor Rick ... ;-) http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/...kes/index.html I'll see your Princeton professor and raise you a Nobel prize winning Princeton professor: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/05/op...05krugman.html Um, Krugman won for _economics_ (and specifically, for "macroeconomics" - certain work on international trade theory vis-a-vis economies of scale, etc.). While he is certainly entitled to his political opinions, he was not recognized for anything to do with politics, nor is his academic background in political science or politics and his admitted liberal bias is, well, bias. That said, his (or anyone else's) assessment of the reaction of a small fraction of what he labels the GOP/Republicans to Obama's mistakes (or alleged mistakes) is not material to the mistakes themselves, nor does it negate them. If anything, it acknowledges them. And I'll point out how humorous it is for you self-proclaimed lefties to be whining about "the politics of spite" given the actions of many on the left with regard to Reagan, Bush 1 and esp. Bush 2, etc. The sad thing is that - as Mike Murphy and David Brooks pointed out the weekend - much of BOTH ends of the spectrum is nothing but noise from the fringe, and Krugman is sinking more and more into the fringe (not that he was ever very objective politically).
