Used to be a joke in Maine:

Some tourist noticed that locals left their cars and houses unlocked
all the time. He asked "Do you always leave your cars unlocked around
here?" The local answered "Yep, 'xcept in September."

"Oh, why's that? Tourists and the like who come up for the fall colors
and steal stuff?"

"Nope. If you leave it unlocked in September, when you come out of the
store, some neighbor's filled it with zucchini."
