On some advice, I explored my local crafts store. In the beading section,
you can find great boxes for your hook storage. I found one from "Craft
Mates" that is clear and has 14 double locking comparments (two rows of
7). There is the individual snap top for each compartment and and a bar
that you have to push in on the side to open the top.
These and a label maker and now I've got boxes for dries, wets, streamers
(2X to 6X), nymph and specialty hooks. Nicely organized and very
portable.
Gonna use one for my bead heads (who woulda thunk of that).

I use hook boxes made by Umpqua. I haven't had any of the problems that you
mentioned. Of course I never turn them upside down either. They sit on my
tying table, stacked up one on top of the other. There are 21 compartments
in each box. They also come with a piece of paper in the lid that you can
write the description of each compartment on to easily identify each hook.
Of course, I use Tiemco hooks, so I keep the little paper label in the
bottom of each compartment too. And since their little hooks come with a
magnet attached to this little piece of paper, it makes it even nicer. You
