I used a window weight to slow my drift, that might work..

The were used in old windows, made of iron, maybe a foot long, 2-3: in
dia with a hole to tie a line to on one end, I think they are still
common, I had 3 or 4.

Just curious. What does AJH stand for? Every time I see your handle on a
psot I think AHJ which is a fire alarm term for "Authority Having
Jurisdiction." ie. State Fire Marshall, city fire department Fire System
inspector, etc...

Carry a small mesh bag in the canoe. Pick up the rocks you need- ( current
vs wieght of canoe). And you have it. When your done empty the mesh bag and
you dont have to listen to it rattle around in the boat. Indian.
