"The ability of Cab-OSil fumed silica to aDsorb, (my emphasis), moisture is one of the properties that makes fumed silica an excellent free flow agent for lumpy or hygroscopic solids." So, it would seem Wolfgang is correct in his deduction. I tried his experiment, dumping some Cab-O-Sil in a cup of water. Some of it floated, but about 50% of it sank, some all the way to the bottom, some adhering to the sides of the cup. When the water was carefully removed from the cup, I was able to retrieve some of the Cab-O-Sil from the sides of the cup, and even though it had been underwater, it was still dry to the touch.
